"Getting
Beyond the System has been invaluable in helping us prepare the
teens we work with transition out of care and into adulthood.
While at the same time being theoretically grounded, its appeal
to our adolescent population lies in its practicality and relevance
to their world. It is hard to imagine any older adolescent in our
care who would not benefit greatly from participating in this program."
~ Bill Baccaglini, Executive Director, New York Foundling
Hospital
"Casey Family Services brought Youth Advocacy Center in to
train our life skills and training staff from all over New England
and Baltimore… It was excellent…relevant to our life
skills work with foster and other youth in all 8 of our divisions…it’s
clear to me that the Getting Beyond the System approach, with its
emphasis on case studies and thoughtful coaching in self-advocacy,
will significantly enhance our life skills work with challenged
youth and their families."
~ David Johnston, Life Skills Coordinator, Casey Family
Services
"The Getting Beyond the System Self-Advocacy Program…
ensures that our young people have the very skills that they need
to advance professionally, but also builds their inner strength
and sense of self so that they can continue to achieve their goals,
both personal and career-related, long after the curriculum has
ended."
~ Margaret Desir-Hart, Chief of Staff, ACS Office of Youth
Development

or 212-675-6181 for more information.
Youth
Advocacy Center is currently focused on offering replication trainings

GETTING BEYOND THE SYSTEM® PHILOSOPHY
AND APPROACHeS seminar
Leaders and advocates in youth development organizations
- child welfare, education, social services - will spend two days
improving how they engage the 'hard to reach' youth and their staff
in preparing youth for the transition to adulthood.
Work directly with Betsy Krebs and Paul Pitcoff, authors
and Youth Advocacy Center's co-founders, along with other leading
professionals from around the country, to discuss and try out approaches
that get beyond the system:
- The Socratic Method
- Self-Advocacy
- Informational Interviews
- And more...
To learn about our philosophy and approaches
and as a step to considering whether to replicate the Getting
Beyond the System (GBS) model in their own agencies, many attend
Youth Advocacy Center’s two-day GBS Philosophy and Approaches
Seminar for senior-level professionals.
Learn How the Getting Beyond the System
Approach
is being used to address challenges such as:
- Empowering youth growing up
in systems that encourage dependence
- Giving youth more responsibility
for their thinking and actions
- Creating a sense of hope and
future orientation with seemingly disaffected youth
- Revitalizing 'independent living' and 'youth development'
