500,000 children
are taken into foster care every year, at a taxpayer cost of upward
of $50,000 per child per year.
Within one year of emancipating
from the foster care system, 33% of youth will be on welfare, 37%
will not finish high school and 27% of the men will be in prison.
Support Youth Advocacy
Center in changing the foster care system to better serve young
adults transitioning to adulthood.
"With self-advocacy I could see my assets and see how to use
them. I realize what I need for my future."
~ Janea, age 18

The generous support of individuals helps Youth Advocacy Center reach
more teens around the country who have aspirations and need support
and opportunities to succeed. Through your donations, Youth Advocacy
Center will train more dedicated social service professionals to bring
the Getting Beyond the System® Self-Advocacy Seminar
to teens in their communities. Youth Advocacy Center will also be
able to expand its advocacy efforts to make self-advocacy a part of
the independent living curriculum for all teens in foster care.
Your support helps teens get beyond the system by:
• Learning about the importance of planning short and long-term
goals and how to advocate to achieve those goals
• Enrolling in an intensive, college-preparatory seminar,
free of charge, to learn self-advocacy tools and practice analytical
skills
• Beginning their successful career path by conducting informational
interviews with an experienced professional in their dream career
field
You can help more teens access the skills they need to succeed as
adults. If you would like more information on how to sponsor individual
classes or to make an in-kind donation, please contact Betsy
Krebs .
